IP Group plc - Portfolio company Xeros successfully completes £3.5m funding round
Environmentally friendly laundry cleaning company raises finance
IP Group plc (LSE: IPO) ("IP Group" or "the Group"), the developer of intellectual property based businesses, is pleased to announce that portfolio company Xeros Limited ("Xeros" or "the Company"), a spin-out company from the University of Leeds that has developed an entirely new clothes cleaning process, has successfully completed a tranched £3.5m fundraising.
The funds were raised from new investors including Entrepreneurs Fund, who led the round, Parkwalk Advisors Ltd and Finance Yorkshire, as well as existing investors including IP Group, IP Venture Fund (a venture capital fund managed by IP Group) and RisingStars Growth Fund II, managed by EV Limited. Following completion of the £1.9m first tranche of the financing, IP Group holds a direct beneficial stake of 25.6% in Xeros valued at £1.2m and the fundraising has resulted in a fair value gain of £0.4m. In addition to the Group's direct beneficial holding of 25.6%, a further 12.3% interest is held by IP Venture Fund.
Harnessing over thirty years of research at the University of Leeds, Xeros is the brand name for a patented polymer-based cleaning system that creates a step change advantage in the cost and environmental impact of aqueous wash cleaning. Water scarcity is an urgent issue across the planet and conventional laundry accounts for 15% of domestic water consumption. Achieving more for less is the obvious imperative yet the last major lower water technology was front loading washing machines over 50 years ago.
Xeros' washing innovation saves up to 90% of the water compared to front loading laundry systems and gives the same performance as conventional washing. The patented process uses reusable plastic beads alongside a fraction of the detergent, to absorb and remove dirt, so has the potential to provide significant benefits in energy and water efficiency and lower effluent without any compromise on cleaning.
Over the last 12 months, Xeros has developed a prototype machine that removes the beads from clothes after washing; has confirmed manufacturing and distribution partnerships both in the UK and US; and is gearing up for an initial launch in the commercial laundry market by the end of 2011. The company is also continuing to work towards the development of a household washing system.
Alan Aubrey, Chief Executive of IP Group, said: "It is particularly pleasing to see three new quality investors become Xeros shareholders while the company has also maintained strong support from its existing investor base. We remain extremely excited by Xeros' potential to become an excellent example of cutting edge British innovation in the 'clean technology' sector."
Bill Westwater, Chief Executive of Xeros, said: "Obviously we are delighted with this funding completion. Of course, it's a vindication of our fast progress to date but, more importantly, we now have the funds to step up our technical development, particularly towards our ultimate goal of developing a washing system for the household. Genuine innovation in the laundry category is pretty hard to come by so Xeros stands out as a game-changer. The opportunity is to provide consumers with lower cost cleaning; dramatically reduce the considerable environment harm of laundry and provide incremental revenue streams throughout the supply chain."
