Revolymer's REVCAP technology delivers a potential market-breakthrough for domestic mass market liquid laundry detergents

Revolymer plc ("Revolymer") (AIM: REVO), the British polymer technology company, announces positive results from its latest in-house tests of its proprietary REVCAP encapsulation technology. These results demonstrate both the stabilisation of commercially important bleach actives in domestic mass market liquid laundry detergents, and the subsequent efficient release of such actives in the washing cycle. Accordingly this technology offers the potential for substantial improvement in the performance of domestic mass market liquid laundry products.

The domestic mass market liquid laundry detergent segment continues to grow more rapidly than the conventional powder domestic laundry detergent market. However, current liquid laundry main wash detergents do not contain bleach actives, which are an important constituent of most modern laundry powders and play a key role in cleaning clothes. This is because it has not, to date, been possible to stabilise such actives commonly found in laundry powders in a liquid formulation.

However, Revolymer's REVCAP encapsulation technology creates a water impermeable coating around particles of bleach active that enables them to remain stable within liquid laundry formulations. Once in a washing machine cycle, changes in the environment (e.g. in pH, concentration or ionic strength) trigger the release of the bleach active which can then play its part in cleaning the clothes.

The results from the latest in-house tests on a variety of commercially available domestic mass market liquid laundry detergents to which Revolymer's REVCAP encapsulation technology has been applied show both formulation stability for up to 28 days in accelerated testing, and efficient release of bleach actives in the washing cycle. Accordingly the REVCAP technology is now being progressed into the commercialisation phase, and management are actively working on exploiting the potential to license the technology to appropriate leading players in the market.

Revolymer will present recent underlying data on its REVCAP encapsulation technology at the 46th International Detergency Conference (www.idc.wfk.de) on Tuesday April 9th at 12.30pm at the Hilton Conference Centre, Dusseldorf, Germany; and at the 104th AOCS Annual Meeting & Expo on Tuesday April 30th at 2.40pm at the Palais des congres de Montreal in Montreal, Canada. No new material information will be disclosed at the conferences.

Roger Pettman, Chief Executive of Revolymer said: "Our in-house trials have indicated that Revolymer's REVCAP encapsulation technology achieves the stabilisation of bleach particles in domestic mass market liquid laundry detergents and their efficient release in the cleaning cycle, which could be described as the "holy grail" for detergent manufacturers. Our technology should enable bleach actives to be included in liquid laundry formulations for the first time, dramatically improving the cleaning power of these products in the future. This is a very exciting development for Revolymer and is a great example of how we are delivering our strategy of developing the next generation of polymer-enhanced products for the global FMCG markets."

Dr Paul Armitage, newly appointed VP of Commercial Development at Revolymer said: "We have made significant advances towards optimising our REVCAP encapsulation technology and the latest in-house trials are generating a significant level of interest. Clients are seriously engaging with the market changing potential afforded by the technology and are identifying opportunities for product differentiation with improved commercial value. It seems clear that a domestic mass market liquid laundry product containing REVCAP technology will have a clear competitive advantage over other liquid laundry products currently on the market, in terms of its cleaning power.
