ITIS HOLDINGS AND VDO ANNOUNCE RDS-TMC AGREEMENT
ITIS to provide traffic information content for VDO's range of in car
navigation systems
ITIS Holdings plc, the AIM listed telematics company specialising in traffic
information and location based services to drivers, announces today a further
contract for its RDS-TMC service. The contract is with VDO Kienzle UK Ltd., a
wholly owned subsidiary of Siemens VDO Automotive which is the market leader
of in car navigation systems which it supplies as factory fit equipment to
motor manufacturers including BMW, Land Rover, Renault and Peugeot as well
having as an extensive distribution to the aftermarket.
Under the terms of the contract, ITIS will integrate and supply real time
traffic information to the VDO range of in-car navigation systems. When
customers purchase in-car navigation systems, they are provided with a CD ROM
which contains all the mapping information. Under this agreement with ITIS,
customers will be offered the opportunity to buy an enhanced CD ROM which is
coded in such a way that enables the RDS-TMC service to be received. This
enhanced CD ROM will also be available to VDO's existing aftermarket base of
50,000 customers.
The contract signifies further industry commitment to the RDS-TMC standard
that is now being adopted by the automotive industry throughout Europe. Whilst
the market for in-car navigation systems is increasing, the integration of
real-time traffic information adds significant 'user appeal' and benefits to
the driver, who will now be aided in making informed choices about their
journeys.
Nick Rendell, Managing Director of VDO says: 'As European market leader in
satellite navigation, it is critical that we offer our customers an RDS-TMC
solution in the UK. The combination of ITIS' high quality traffic content and
their national distribution through Classic FM means that VDO can now offer a
complete dynamic navigation solution to new and existing customers'
Stuart Marks, Chief Executive of ITIS Holdings, says: 'RDS-TMC is the only
true telematics standard that has been integrated with in-car navigation
systems. It provides the best channel for the cost effective and timely
delivery of traffic information as well as a seamless, multi lingual service
that is being adopted throughout Europe. We recognise VDO's leading market
position in both the aftermarket for vehicle navigation systems as well as
their prominence as a supplier to the automotive sector. This deal endorses
our strategy of positioning ITIS as a key partner to vehicle manufacturers and
their suppliers.'

About ITIS
ITIS' traffic information is collated from a combination of journalistic data
and real time traffic information sources using FVD (floating vehicle data).
The information is delivered to the vehicle's in-car navigation system using
RDS-TMC, broadcast as data on nationwide FM radio in the UK (ITIS has an
exclusive license which is broadcast on the sub-carrier of Classic FM). The
received information is 'decoded' and then integrated to the in-car navigation
receiver, providing the driver with real time traffic information relevant to
the selected route or journey.
About VDO Kienzle
VDO Kienzle's product and services portfolio ranges from navigation, car
multimedia and sophisticated car audio systems to vehicle spares and
tachographs, fleet management systems and products for special OEM
applications. VDO Kienzle holds a leading position in the automotive
aftermarket. The company has 1500 employees and it is present in 80 countries,
over 10,000 workshops and all relevant distribution channels.
About RDS-TMC
RDS-TMC (Radio Data Service - Traffic Message Channel) is the European
standard for providing traffic data over conventional FM radio channels.
Whilst RDS is familiar to drivers allowing them to stay tuned to the same
channel regardless of frequency, the TMC standard provides them with the
latest traffic updates in either speech, text or integrated into their in-car
navigation systems. RDS-TMC services are already operational in many European
countries. In the UK, the availability of satellite navigation as an optional
extra on passenger cars has grown by 3900% (full year 1999 to 2000). This year
to June over 20% of new vehicles could have had an RDS-TMC enabled satellite
navigation system installed either as standard or as an option.
