ITIS awarded contract for Estimotion Technology in the USA
ITIS Holdings plc (ITIS), a leading road traffic information specialist is
pleased to announce that it has been awarded a two year contract worth £500,000
by the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) in the United States to
deploy its Estimotion technology in the Baltimore region. Estimotion generates
real time traffic flow information based on anonymously sampling the positions
of mobile phones in moving vehicles.
ITIS will license the Estimotion software to MDOT and is in negotiations with
other commercial organisations to sell the data for use in applications such as
in-vehicle navigation and broadcast services. There will be no new overhead
requirement for this project as the software allows all technical support and
implementation to be handled by the existing teams in the UK and Israel.
This announcement builds upon recent contracts to roll out the Estimotion
technology in the UK and in Belgium and is the first time that traffic
information has been collected in the US using this method. ITIS is confident
that a successful implementation in Baltimore will attract other State
Departments of Transportation to employ this technology. Traditional methods of
collecting traffic flow data are not only capital intensive resulting in
significant long term maintenance costs but are also unable to offer reliable
information in urban areas. Estimotion addresses both of these problems and as
a result, MDOT will receive accurate, real time information from the heart of
the city through to major roads and interstates.
ITIS has also agreed terms with a major cellular network partner to support
Baltimore and other cities in the US.
Stuart Marks, Chief Executive, ITIS Holdings plc said 'This is an exciting
milestone for the Company and proves beyond doubt that with our technology and
knowledge of the market for traffic information we can confidently operate in
virtually any city in the world. Congestion is a major problem everywhere and
Governments and the Commercial sector are increasingly trying to find more
efficient ways to access reliable information. We fully believe that ITIS is
set to play a major part in this need for consistent and scaleable traffic data.
For Baltimore to select ITIS for this project is a huge endorsement and I am
confident that we will win further business in the US and internationally.'
NOTES TO THE EDITOR:
• ITIS Holdings plc, listed on AIM, is the UK's leading provider of
traffic information services. ITIS has invested in the development of a unique
system for the collection and analysis of traffic information; it combines
information from the Automobile Association (AA) traffic control centres with
ITIS historic and real time Floating Vehicle Data (FVD(R)) to provide journey
time forecasts and real time updates. ITIS now operates the largest commercial
application of FVD(R) anywhere in the world, and delivers the content over a
variety of platforms including RDS-TMC (Alert C), digital radio and automated
telephone services (IVR) under the AA RoadWatch brand.
• Estimotion, Inc. was founded in July 2000 and was acquired by ITIS in
December 2003. Estimotion is now ITIS Traffic Services ltd based in Israel.
Estimotion has developed patented technology which provides a unique and high
quality system for measuring and forecasting real time traffic flow based on
anonymously sampling the positions of mobile phones. Whilst an individual record
of a mobile phone's position is typically less accurate than a corresponding GPS
record, this is compensated by the large number of mobile phones on any road,
knowledge of the underlying road network and the application of statistical
techniques. Estimotion has developed a full working demonstration site with high
success, using live mobile phone data in the Tel Aviv area of Israel, and has
calibrated the results against traffic simulation models and loop data.
