ITV plc announces appointment of Chairman
ITV plc today announced the appointment of Sir Peter Burt (59) as the new
non-executive Chairman of the company. The appointment will become effective
from 15 March.
Sir Peter is currently Chairman of Gleacher Shacklock, the UK arm of a US
investment bank. He is also a non-executive Director of the Shell Transport
and Trading Company plc. Between 2001 and 2003 he was Executive Deputy
Chairman of HBOS plc following its merger with Bank of Scotland where he was
Group Chief Executive between 1996 and 2001. He began his career in 1968 at
Hewlett Packard Co in Palo Alto, California, and returned to the UK in 1970 to
join Conversational Software Limited and then Edward Bates & Sons Ltd, both
based in Edinburgh, before joining Bank of Scotland in 1975.
Sir Brian Pitman, interim non-executive Chairman of ITV, said: 'Peter's
experience of generating value speaks for itself and I am delighted to welcome
him to ITV. I have no doubt that his leadership and guidance will be enormously
beneficial to both the merger process and the resurgence of ITV as a major force
in UK television. This is an excellent appointment and another significant
milestone for ITV.'
Fidelity, ITV's biggest shareholder, welcomed the appointment and the company
has consulted widely with other major institutions.
Sir Peter Burt said: 'ITV is an exciting and vibrant business. It is having its
best on screen year on year performance for ten years and there is a clear
strategy in place which is beginning to show results. I am looking forward to
working with Charles Allen and the management team to take this strategy forward
to realise ITV's enormous potential.'
