John Lewis of Hungerford plc

The Company has today been notified that 510,000 ordinary shares were
transferred to Linda Lewis, a director of John Lewis of Hungerford plc, from the
estate of a deceased relative, on 28 January 2004. This increases Mrs Lewis'
holding to 510,000 ordinary shares representing approximately 0.34 per cent of
the Company's issued share capital.
