REPURCHASE OF SHARES IN JOHNSON MATTHEY PLC

Johnson Matthey Plc announces that on 5th September 2001, it purchased for 
cancellation 180,000 ordinary shares of Johnson Matthey Plc at an average price 
of 1000.07 pence per share. Upon the cancellation of these shares, the number of
shares in issue will be 220,734,420.
