              THE FLEMING EMERGING MARKETS INVESTMENT TRUST PLC

                REPURCHASE OF ORDINARY SHARES FOR CANCELLATION

The Fleming Emerging Markets Investment Trust plc announces that on Friday 9th
March 2001 in the market it purchased for cancellation 230,000 ordinary shares
at 123.5 pence per share representing 0.25% of the ordinary shares in issue.

The number of shares repurchased to date now totals 5,400,000.

The remaining shares in issue following this notification are 91,454,218.
