Appointment of a Director

The   Board   of  The  Fleming  Japanese   Smaller
Companies  Investment  Trust  plc  is  pleased  to
announce the appointment of Mr Christopher  Purvis
as  a  non-executive  Director  with  effect  from
today.

Mr  Purvis  is the Chief Executive of  Japan  2001
Ltd,  a charity co-ordinating a series of cultural
and  educational events relating to Japan in 2001.
He is an adviser to UBS Warburg.  He also holds  a
number of other Directorships.

Mr.   Purvis  is  currently  a  Director  of   the
following publicly quoted company:
