Kenmare's Development Association wins
Nedbank Capital Green Mining Award
27 October 2009
Kenmare Resources plc's development association, KMAD, has won a
prestigious award for its activities aimed at social and economic
enhancement of the communities surrounding Kenmare's Titanium
Minerals Mine in northern Mozambique. The award was presented at the
Nedbank Capital Green Mining Awards ceremony held in Johannesburg
last week.
The Nedbank Socio-Economic Award was made by a panel of independent
and expert adjudicators following an interview and three day site
visit to examine the work of KMAD and meet with project
beneficiaries. The awards attracted a record number of entries this
year, with a good number of quality entries, resulting in stiff
competition. Nedbank is one of the largest banking groups in South
Africa.
Nedbank particularly praised the fact that KMAD's development work
began before mining commenced, that it has an overall strategic
vision and a 'bottom up' approach, as well as close partnerships with
international and local Non-Governmental Organisations and Government
bodies.
Just four weeks ago, Kenmare Resources plc won the President's Award
for the best International CSR Programme from the Chambers of
Commerce of Ireland, in association with the Irish Government
Department of Community Affairs, at a ceremony in Dublin.
KMAD works alongside the community, business, Non-Governmental
Organisations and Government to run and support projects in
education, income generation, health, savings & credit, sports and
food security.
Charles Carvill, Chairman said "We are delighted that the work of
KMAD has been recognised with this highly respected award. It
recognises the commitment of Kenmare and the staff of KMAD, together
with partner organisations, in implementing projects that create
sustainable economic opportunities independent of the mine. I would
also like to acknowledge the funding support received from private
donations as well a number of organisations such as Dutch development
bank, FMO."
