R J MARGETTS

The Board of Legal & General Group Plc announces the appointment of R J
Margetts CBE, as Non-Executive Chairman.   The election of Mr Margetts
followed a full consideration of internal and external candidates and takes
immediate effect.

Mr Margetts has been Acting Chairman since the sudden death of Sir Christopher
Harding in December.


Notes:

Rob Margetts was appointed to the Board of Legal & General on 12 June 1996.  
He was elected Vice Chairman in May 1998.   He was also Senior Independent
Director and Chairman of Legal & General's Audit Committee.

Mr Margetts was born in 1946 and was educated at Highgate School and at
Cambridge University, where he obtained a degree in chemical engineering.   He
held a succession of managerial posts at ICI before being appointed to the
Board of ICI Plc on 1 September 1992.   He was appointed Vice Chairman of ICI
on 1 May 1998.

Rob Margetts is also a Non Executive Director of Anglo American PLC, a
Governor of Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, a member of
the Council for Science and Technology and a member of the Advisory Committee
on Business and the Environment.

He will be relinquishing his responsibilities at ICI at the end of June 2000.

He is married with four children.
