Legal & General Group Plc today announces that Mrs Frances Heaton has been
appointed as a Non-Executive Director of the Group with effect from 1st July
2001.

Mrs Heaton is Deputy Chairman of W. S. Atkins plc and is also a member of the
Committee on Standards in Public Life.

Mrs Heaton, 56, was, until recently, an Executive Director of Lazard Brothers
& Co. Limited and a Non-Executive Director of the Bank of England.  She has
previously held Non-Executive positions with BUPA Limited, Commercial Union
plc and Elementis plc.
