                                   New Chairman


The Board of Lookers plc is pleased to announce the appointment of Phil White
CBE as Chairman of the Company with immediate effect, following the announcement
made at our AGM on 11th May that Fred Maguire would be stepping down from this
position.

Phil, aged 56, was appointed to the Board of National Express Group in January
1996.  He became its Chief Executive in 1997 and since that time has been
instrumental in the development and growth of the Group resulting in its leading
position today as an international public transport provider.  Phil is a
chartered accountant and has extensive experience of both listed and private
companies and working in both the public and private sectors.  He is also a non
executive director of Kier Group plc.

Ken Surgenor, Chief Executive, said:

'We are delighted to welcome Phil to the Lookers Board.  His extensive business
experience will provide a valuable contribution to the business at an important
stage in our development.'

There are no details to be disclosed in respect of Philip White, as per 16.4(b)
of the Listing Rules, paragraph 6.f.2 b to g.
