PERFORMANCE
· MPLF's ordinary share estimated NAV total return was (3.54%) in March, compared to the total return of the Credit Suisse Leveraged Loan Index of (0.10%).
· Secondary loan prices declined in March amidst broader market volatility in the wake of banking industry turmoil instigated by the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank ("SVB"). Loan prices declined meaningfully in the immediate aftermath of the SVB failure before recovering into month end after US government actions assuaged concerns of broader credit market contagion. While CLO issuance and associated loan demand remained consistent throughout the month, retail loan funds experienced significant outflows following SVB, putting downward pressure on the market.
· CLO equity valuations for the month declined slightly, in parallel with the monthly return for loans and a widening of equity discount rates. As noted in previous commentary, the base rate dynamics that have impacted recent CLO equity distributions have moderated and market participants expect distributions to improve in coming quarters. The magnitude of additional Federal Reserve rate hike expectations has tempered, and one-month and three-month reference rates have settled into a more normal basis.
· Defaults in the loan market picked up in March as three constituents of the Morningstar/LSTA index defaulted during the month. As at 31 March 2023, MPLF had exposure to two of these three loans - Diamond Sports with a 0.50% exposure and Catalina Marketing with a 0.01% exposure. MPLF had no exposure to Loyalty Ventures, the other index constituent to default during the month. With these three defaults, the index's lagging 12-month default rate by notional amount increased to 1.32% as at 31 March.
MARKET
· The CSLLI delivered a (0.10%) return in March as loan prices retreated in the wake of banking industry instability and broader market concerns from the SVB collapse. The average indicative bid price of the CSLLI decreased to 92.67% at 28 February from 93.49% at 28 February while the weighted average indicative bid price of MPLF's underlying loans decreased to 93.26% at 31 March from 94.26% at 28 February.
· March CLO issuance totaled $10.9 billion across 25 new issue CLOs. Despite the broader market turmoil, CLOs were still inclined to price and take advantage of better entry prices for their portfolios in completing their ramp. Many transactions that priced in March had agreed to terms with lead AAA debt investors in the weeks prior to the volatility, stabilizing the deal execution and ensuring the transaction wasn't put at risk.
· Institutional loan volume totaled $8.4 billion in March according to Morningstar/LCD. After the February 2023 loan issuance figures were boosted by refinancings as issuers extended debt maturities in a more receptive market, the market volatility sidelined similar issuances in March. In addition, M&A & LBO activity remains challenged and a shrinking portion has been financed in the syndicated loan market. Total institutional loan issuance for the first quarter was $49.5 billion, with over 70% of the volume coming from refinancings and only $9.8 billion from M&A activity. This M&A generated output was the lowest quarterly total since the first quarter of 2010. Despite this anemic M&A volume in Q1, the market did see several new deal announcements at the end of March which may portend better deal flow in the balance of the year.
· Retail loan funds experienced an outflow of approximately $4.4 billion in March according to J.P. Morgan. While the February 2023 outflow figure was the smallest in nearly a year, March outflows accelerated in the wake of the banking industry turmoil. Pitchbook/LCD reported the weekly outflow for the week ended 22 March was the largest in nine months.
· Since the end of March, the average indicative bid price of the CSLLI has increased by 0.39% to 93.06% (as at 18 April 2023).
