Performance

·      MPLF's ordinary share estimated NAV total return was (2.47%) in June, compared to the total return of the Credit Suisse Leveraged Loan Index ("CSLLI") of 0.27%.

·      Secondary loan prices retreated in June as economic data indicating a moderating rate of inflation spurred retail funds outflows into the end of the month and historic repricing activity reduced the amount of assets trading at a premium to par. Demand from new issue CLO formation was slightly lower during the month as managers focused efforts on refinancing and resetting existing deals.

·      CLO equity discount rates widened marginally during the month in parallel with the loan price movements, and record loan repricing activity continues to impact forward excess spread cash flow projections.

·      As at 30 June 2024 MPLF had no exposure to Oxea Group, the sole constituent of the Morningstar/LSTA Index to default during the month.  The index's lagging 12-month default rate by notional amount decreased to 0.92% at 30 June as other defaults rolled off the calculation.

Market

·      The CSLLI delivered a 0.27% total return in June as monthly interest accruals offset lower loan market prices during the month.  Loan markets retreated in the back half of the month as retail investors digested moderating inflation reports and the potential impact on interest rates.  Aggregate CLO supply remained robust, but the balance shifted more to refinancings and resets of existing CLOs, transactions without incremental loan demand.

·      Headline primary loan issuance increased to ~$54 billion in June from $51 billion in May yet remains mostly characterized by refinancing transactions.  Loan repricing amendments also maintained an extremely active presence in the market with another $74 billion processed in June; through the first half of the year approximately 30% of the $1.4 trillion loan index has repriced.  The significant repricing and refinancing volumes have pressured loan spreads as the average nominal spread of the Morningstar/LSTA loan index declined approximately 13 basis points through the first half of the year.  High multiples and elevated financing costs have constrained M&A driven primary loan issuance and has contributed to the challenging loan market technical.  The 2nd quarter saw ~$30 billion of M&A related primary loan issuance, which is almost half of the ~$58 billion average quarterly figure from 2017 through 2021, according to Pitchbook data.

·      Despite the healthy demand and market support for higher quality assets within the broader loan market, the stressed segment of the market remains elevated.  At 30 June, the share of loans in the Morningstar/LSTA index that had bid prices lower than 80% was 4.42%, only marginally lower than the May figure.  When measuring by number of issuers, the percentage was 5.64%, its highest monthly figure of the year.

·      The average indicative bid price of the Morningstar/LCD loan index decreased to 96.59% at 30 June from 96.93% at 31 May while the weighted average indicative bid price of MPLF's underlying loans decreased to 96.56% at 30 June from 96.74% at 31 May.

·      June CLO issuance totaled $11.3 billion across 22 new issue CLOs, less than half the May 2024 total as issuers focused more on refinancing and reset transactions of existing vehicles given the challenges ramping new portfolios.  While CLO liability levels for clean new issue portfolios have continued to compress, the repricing dynamic in loan markets and limited primary loan issuance have impacted the headline arbitrage.  CLO reset and refinancing volume in June were $21.7 billion and $8.4 billion respectively, the highest combined monthly reset and refinancing volumes year to date.

·      Retail loan funds experienced an aggregate inflow of approximately $1.2 billion in June according to J.P. Morgan.  While this represents a continued positive movement into loan funds, the inflow total was the smallest since January, and weekly flows were negative towards the end of the month.

·      Since the end of June the average indicative bid price of the CSLLI has increased by 0.09% to 95.76% (as at 24 July 2024).

Investment

·      Subsequent to month end, Investcorp priced and closed a reset of the Marble Point CLO XVII transaction.  The reset includes a new five year reinvestment period while refinancing all classes of existing debt, tightening the weighted average cost of debt by approximately 16 basis points from S+213 to S+197.
