APPOINTMENT DATE FOR NEW FINANCE DIRECTOR

On 29 March 2001, Marks & Spencer announced the appointment of Alison Reed as
Finance Director Designate.

The Company is pleased to announce that the date of Alison Reed's appointment
to the Marks and Spencer p.l.c. Board as Finance Director is 11 July 2001.

Robert Colvill continues as Finance Director until that date and thereafter
will remain on the Board for a period of time as Director responsible for
Financial Services and Property, as well as overseeing the transactions
arising from the business restructuring strategy.
