PHOTOPLANET SIGNS-UP ONLINE MERCHANTS
Photo-Me International and BT have signed-up 14 online merchants
who will offer e-commerce services via PhotoPlanet - the
revolutionary Internet-enabled photo booths. The rollout of the
booths will begin at the end of the month with 1,000 installed by
the end of the year around the UK.
The booths will allow users to purchase goods online via a
shopping menu, as well as use a 'surf the Internet' service
providing access to BT's PhotoPlanet kiosk portal. The portal
offers users a range of online content including news,
entertainment, travel and lifestyle information, as well as email
capability.
Nine of the 14 merchants will have a prime position on the
shopping menu home page, these are:
* thetrainline.com - provides times, books tickets and
reserves seats for any train operator in mainland UK
* confetti.co.uk - an interactive wedding guide including
wedding and gift shop
* uTravel.co.uk - online source of holiday brochures
* Loot - Internet Search Engine-free ads, auctions and a loot
cafe
* Buzz - discounted flights
* ebookers.com - 24hr travel service offering discounted
flights, hotels and holiday offers
* CGU Direct - travel insurance
* Drinx.com - special offers on alcoholic drinks with home
delivery
* Dance DJ Direct - online music shop
The companies will receive brand visibility among all PhotoPlanet
customers - whether they are using the booths for photographic or
online services. Users wishing to make a purchase can click on
the merchant's icon which provides a 'direct dial' to a web site
or call centre.
In addition to the shopping menu available inside the booth, an
external video screen will allow the nine merchants with a prime
position on the shopping menu home page to advertise their
products and services.
Access to merchants' web sites via the shopping menu will be
available at a lower cost than for surfing the Internet through
the Internet portal service.
Ben Andradi, managing director, BT Internet & eBusiness, said:
'PhotoPlanet allows people on the move to purchase goods online,
surf the Internet and send and receive emails. The booths are an
important part of BT's strategy to get as many people in the UK
online as possible, offering a variety of access devices.'
'The speed with which merchants took up the e-commerce
opportunities available endorses the potential of the PhotoPlanet
concept to attract an online audience who want to make purchases
and surf the Internet', concluded Andradi.
Serge Crasnianski, chief executive officer of Photo-Me
International, stated: 'Photo-Me is pleased to be associated with
BT to offer a potent combination of e-commerce, email, Internet,
advertising and digital photographic facilities in high footfall
areas and we are confident that the PhotoPlanet booths will prove
a lucrative venture for BT and ourselves.'
Carin Wannberg at Loot commented: 'Loot is all about information,
by any means possible. Our content should be accessible by
anyone, anyday and anyhow. We currently distribute via paper, the
web, WAP and digital TV - and see the new booths as an important
new distribution stream which is fun, functional and which will
have a significant impact on the information distribution
landscape.'
Tracy Thompson, marketing manager, Utravel, United News and
Media, Miller Freeman, said: 'uTravel.co.uk is unique in the
online travel/holiday arena. PhotoPlanet has presented
uTravel.co.uk with a great marketing opportunity: not only does
it provide a route to the general public but the video provides
that additional advantage of being able to tell users what makes
your site different from the rest. By placing 'easy to access'
Internet facilities in familiar, but previously uncharted
environments such as supermarkets and railway stations, the
PhotoPlanet booths provide a unique vehicle with which to present
the Internet medium to a new target market - something
uTravel.co.uk very much wants to be a part of.'
Note to editors:
The multimedia booths, branded PhotoPlanet, enable users to send
and receive email via BT's subscription free service talk21,
create their own web site and surf the Internet, as well as
offering the full range of Photo-Me International's photographic
products including ID photos, customised postcards and fun
stickers.
