Purchase of Own Securities

The Company announces that on 17 August 2001, pursuant to the authority
granted by shareholders at the extraordinary general meeting of the Company
held on 7 March 2001, it purchased 4,525,852 of its own ordinary shares of 10p
each at a price of 27p per share.



Following the above purchase there are now 61,063,538 ordinary shares in
issue.
