YooMedia signs exclusive interactive TV technology license
YooMedia plc, the interactive TV company, has acquired the exclusive, worldwide
license from WAP Along Ltd to exploit its patented technology. The patent covers
synchronised interactivity between a broadcast programme, TV or radio, and
wireless devices such as mobile phones. The deal allows YooMedia to pioneer a
range of entertainment and information services independent of the digital set
top box.
Potential applications include unique TV programme enhancements, such as game
shows in which viewers can take part, and sports programmes with synchronised
live betting. Unlike existing interactive TV services, which are dependent on
viewers having subscribed for digital TV, all that will be required to
participate is an ordinary mobile phone. Accordingly, whole families can play at
home or groups can play in social venues such as sports stadiums and pubs.
Revenues will be derived from a mixture of licensing, sub-licensing and
telephony-based user charges, such as reverse SMS billing. YooMedia will start
developing applications using WAP Along's technology immediately and plans to
start trials with broadcasters over the next few months.
Michael Sinclair, YooMedia's Chairman and Chief Executive said: 'WAP Along's
technology is the perfect extension to our existing participation-based products
for TV. It allows us to support a wide range of new game and messaging
applications for television broadcasters, which will be accessible to a far
greater number of people than previously.'
Saj Muzaffar, Managing Director of WAP Along Ltd, said: 'The patent has huge
potential. Preliminary discussions with broadcasters show there is significant
interest in using this technology because it reaches beyond a single person
sitting in front of a set top box. YooMedia are perfectly placed to develop the
technology and I'm delighted to being working with them.'
