                 National Grid Acquisition of Niagara Mohawk

National Grid notes the statement on the Niagara Mohawk website referring to
the Securities and Exchange Commission approval of the acquisition of Niagara
Mohawk.

National Grid announces that this statement has been placed on the website in
error and that approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission has not
yet been obtained.

The acquisition remains on track for completion in early 2002.
