NIAGARA MOHAWK ANNOUNCES EARNINGS FOR THIRD QUARTER
ENDING 30 SEPTEMBER 2000

Niagara Mohawk ('NMK') today announced earnings for the
third quarter to 30 September 2000.  Copies of their announcement

National Grid and NMK announced on 5 September 2000 the
signing of a Merger  Agreement under which National Grid
will acquire all of the outstanding shares of NMK.
