                               Board appointments


Immediately after the Annual General Meeting of Next plc being held today, 16
May 2002, David Jones will become Chairman and will make the following
statement:

I have great pleasure in announcing that Alistair Mitchell-Innes will become
Deputy Chairman of Next plc with immediate effect, and that Lord Grabiner QC
will join the Board as a Non-Executive Director, also with immediate effect.

Alistair Mitchell-Innes became a member of the Board in 1989, and is the Senior
Non-Executive Director.  He is also Chairman of Next Pension Trustees Limited
and Anglo & Overseas Trust plc.

Lord Grabiner QC is one of the UK's leading commercial lawyers with a
substantial court and advisory practice dealing with major commercial issues.
He is Head of Chambers at 1, Essex Court.
