Old Mutual PLC 17 July 2000 OLD MUTUAL PLC Julian Roberts FCA appointed Group Finance Director The Board of Old Mutual plc is pleased to announce that Julian Roberts FCA has been appointed Group Finance Director, with effect from 21 August 2000. Mr Roberts is currently Group Finance Director of Sun Life and Provincial Holdings PLC ('Sun Life'), the insurance group which was in the FTSE 100 Index until completion of its take-over by AXA. Mr Roberts qualified as an accountant with Price Waterhouse. Prior to joining Sun Life, he held a number of key positions in financial management in the insurance broking industry, which included the establishment and development to its current leading position of Aon Corporation's insurance interests in the UK. It was announced on 30 June that Eric Anstee, currently Group Finance Director, was to become Chief Executive, Financial Services, assuming responsibility for the principal non-life assurance businesses of the Group. These include the international asset management operations of Old Mutual, the broking businesses of Capel Cure Sharp and Old Mutual Securities, and the Gerrard Group operations which were acquired with effect from 31 March. On 19 June, Old Mutual announced an agreed $1.4 billion acquisition of United Asset Management Corporation of Boston, USA Biographical details for Julian Roberts: Julian Roberts, aged 43 years, was educated at Tonbridge School and is a graduate of Stirling University with a BA (Hons) in Accountancy and Business Law. Julian joined Price Waterhouse as a graduate trainee but decided after four years to make a career in business. Following the purchase by Willis Faber of Stewart Wrightson plc, where he was group financial controller, he joined as finance director the founding company for Aon Group's substantial investment in insurance broking activities in the UK, becoming Director and CFO of Aon UK Holdings Ltd in 1993. During this time, he was responsible for acquiring and integrating a number of insurance businesses, including Leslie & Godwin, Bain Hogg, Alexander & Alexander and Minet Holdings. On 1 January 1999, he became Group Finance Director of Sun Life and Provincial Holdings PLC. During his time with Sun Life, he was closely involved in AXA's £3.4 billion acquisition of Guardian Royal Exchange, integration of the general insurance businesses as well as the sale of the Guardian Life operation and the Life company in Ireland. He is a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, and a member of the Association of Corporate Treasurers. His interests include golf, music and rugby.
