  Gerhard Van Niekerk to retire as MD of Old Mutual South Africa:
                Roddy Sparks is named as successor

Old  Mutual today announces the planned retirement of Gerhard  van
Niekerk as Managing Director of Old Mutual South Africa, effective
31 March 2001. Thereafter, he will continue to lend his experience
to  the  growth  of  the South African business  as  non-executive
director  on the Board of Old Mutual Life Assurance Company  South
Africa.  In  addition, he will remain Chairman of Old Mutual  Bank
and will become Chairman of Old Mutual Namibia.

'Gerhard  has made an enormous contribution to the growth  of  Old
Mutual  over  the  past  four decades, in particular  leading  the
organisation  through  the  successful  demutualisation   process.
Through  his  leadership an extraordinarily dynamic  business  and
management team has been built up, laying a strong foundation  for
the future,' said Mike Levett, Chairman of Old Mutual plc. 'We are
delighted  that we will retain his wealth of insight on the  South
African and Namibian boards.'

Roddy  Sparks  (41),  currently Executive  General  Manager,  will
succeed  Gerhard van Niekerk as Managing Director. Deputy Managing
Directors will be Peter de Beyer (44), currently Executive General
Manager  of  the  Individual Life business, and Peter  Moyo  (37),
currently  Executive  General Manager  of  the  Employee  Benefits
business.

Announcing  the  changes, Jim Sutcliffe, Chief  Executive  of  Old
Mutual  plc's international life assurance businesses,  commented:
'Roddy Sparks, Peter Moyo and Peter de Beyer will head up a world-
class management team, that will spearhead our growth in the South
African marketplace.'

Peter  de Beyer will be responsible for the business units serving
individual  customers, while Peter Moyo will lead  the  businesses
addressing the institutional market.

'This  clear  focus  of  responsibilities  provides  us  with  the
springboard to deliver our strategic intent,' said Sutcliffe.  'To
keep  winning in South Africa, we have to centre our  business  on
the  customer,  and  this will help us move rapidly  towards  that
goal.'
