                           Transaction in Own Shares


Old Mutual plc ('the Company') announces that on 5 May 2008 it purchased through
Merrill Lynch South Africa (Pty) Limited a total of 521,483 of the Company's
ordinary shares of 10p each.


All of these shares were acquired on the JSE Limited at an average price of ZAR
18.9775 per share.


The purchased shares will be held in treasury.  The Company's current issued
share capital is now 5,280,415,932 ordinary shares of 10p each (excluding the
233,221,688 shares that have so far been repurchased into treasury).
