TRANSACTION IN OWN SHARES - PROHIBITED PERIOD SHARE REPURCHASE PROGRAMME

Old Mutual plc ('Old Mutual') announces that it has entered into an irrevocable,
non-discretionary arrangement to purchase shares on the London Stock Exchange on
its own behalf for holding in Treasury during its prohibited period, which
commences on 1 January 2008 and ends on the date of publication of Old Mutual's
preliminary results for the year ended 31 December 2007, which is expected to
take place on 27 February 2008.

Any acquisitions will be effected within certain pre-set parameters, and in
accordance with both Old Mutual's general authority to repurchase shares and
Chapter 12 of the Listing Rules of the UK Listing Authority.
