2D3 WINS EMMY AWARD
FOR REVOLUTIONARY VISUAL EFFECTS TECHNOLOGY
US Television Academy Honours British Company's Contribution To Post Production
Oxford, UK September 23rd 2002 - The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has
announced that 2d3's automated motion tracker boujou has been awarded a
Primetime Emmy Engineering Award.
Cited for its revolutionary impact on the creation of complex visual effects,
boujou was awarded the Emmy at the Engineering and Interactive Television awards
ceremony in Los Angeles. The Emmy Award is given to 'an individual, company or
an organization for developments in engineering that are either so extensive an
improvement on existing methods or so innovative in nature that they materially
affect the transmission, recording or reception of television.'
Several of this year's other Emmy award winners - Band of Brothers, Dinotopia,
and Jack & The Beanstalk - are UK-based productions. All made use of boujou for
their special effects.
2d3, a division of OMG plc (AIM:OMG) was one of only five companies from around
the world to receive the award in this year's ceremony, together with Apple
Computer, Inc.
The company was launched in 2000 to develop commercial applications based on
leading research in the vision science field. Since its release early in 2001,
2d3's debut product boujou has made a major contribution to high-profile feature
films, television productions, music videos and commercials by facilitating the
creation of visual effects combining live footage and 3D, and by assisting in
complex compositing tasks.
boujou automates the process known as matchmoving or camera tracking, in which
live footage is exactly matched with computer-generated elements to create the
visual effects which are increasingly the lifeblood of contemporary
entertainment production. Matchmoving was previously a highly skilled and
expensive process, adding significantly to the cost of film and television
post-production. Using advanced adaptive algorithms developed from leading-edge
vision science research, boujou has made it possible to create complex visual
effects in a greater range of shooting conditions, and in a fraction of the time
previously required.
With feature film productions such as the Harry Potter series now routinely
using boujou to help create hundreds of sophisticated effects scenes, the
smaller budgets normal in television production have until recently acted as a
brake on the use of similar techniques in small-screen entertainment. By greatly
reducing one of the most significant post-production costs, boujou has now
brought feature-quality effects work into the mainstream for television
producers.

Matchmoving and the visual effects that rely on it are now also economically and
technically attainable by professionals outside the film and television
industries, such as architectural practices, industrial manufacturers and
product designers.
Julian Morris, Chairman, OMG plc, comments, 'boujou's success in feature-film
production has been phenomenal, and now this award is a very welcome recognition
by the industry that 2d3's technology is making it much easier for television
producers to raise their production values too. 2d3's mission is to change the
economics of visual effects production in many industry sectors by automating
highly-skilled and costly tasks. The widespread success and acclaim for 2d3's
first product underlines the great potential of this strategy.'
About boujou
With a user base that includes Dreamworks, Lucas Film, Sony Pictures, Rhythm &
Hues and Cinesite, boujou is targeted at film and television effects, games
development, architectural visualisation and industrial design applications.
boujou allows 3D professionals for the first time to derive complex camera
tracks and calibration data from film or video material, without the need for
manual tracking input. Proven in production in major feature films including
Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Black Hawk Down, in
television productions like Dinotopia, Band of Brothers, Path to War, Jim
Henson's Jack & The Beanstalk: The Real Story, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and
in commercials, music promos and in architectural and industrial visualisations,
boujou's combination of complete automation, accuracy and exceptional ability to
track difficult material has removed previous limitations on what is achievable
in effects production.
boujou2 is available for Windows and Linux on standard hardware. boujouVE is
available for Windows and Linux on standard hardware.
