Contract Gain

Screen PLC 24 August 2001 SCREEN PLC - CONTRACT GAIN CCTV security and vehicle monitoring system for Southampton Container Terminal. Screen plc ('Screen'), the security and communications systems provider, announces that it has won a key order from Southampton Container Terminals Ltd ('SCT') to provide an integrated CCTV security and traffic control system. This significant order will see Screen's specialist CCTV division working closely with SCT's in-house systems and engineering departments to provide one of the UK's largest container terminals with an advanced CCTV based solution to support operational efficiency improvements as the port continues to expand it capacity. SCT's position as one of the leading container terminals in Europe has already ensured considerable international interest in the project, with the project likely to be seen as a pilot for similar solutions at container terminals across the world. Designed specifically to enable increased vehicle movements while maintaining high levels of security, the systems will also help record container images so that damage compensation claims can be readily verified. Said Maurice Winn, Head of Systems at SCT: 'Our commitment to continued investment and improved performance requires the increasing use of technology, some of which is being developed specifically for this project. Screen's CCTV division has continually proven they can meet our requirements over many years. That, together with their expertise in implementing major solutions for large organisations, gave us the confidence to proceed with an innovative and highly visible project.' In addition to providing operational efficiency improvements by automating the tracking of vehicles and containers as they enter and move around the terminal, SCT also requested an automatic identification and damage recognition capability to meet the growing need to inspect and record the state of all vehicles and containers passing through the container terminal. From within its Petards operating units, Screen can now provide a full automatic vehicle identification and damage recognition / recording solution using Argus DCS (Damage Control System), one of a series of products from recently acquired Pentyre Ltd. Argus DCS has been developed to reduce losses from bogus compensation and insurance claims at freight terminals, boat yards and vehicle compounds. Commenting on the contract, Owen Williams, Chairman of Screen said: 'With Screen continuing to build its position as a supplier of technology based solutions to major infrastructure projects, this latest contract provides a solid indication of our capabilities and the potential for such solutions.' Ends Additional Information Screen, listed on AIM since 1997, is a business-to-business solutions provider specialising in advanced security, communications and mobile data systems for the police and fire services, as well as central and local government, utilities and commercial sectors. Under the Petards brand, Screen develops and supports market-leading solutions for surveillance, integrated mobile data, in-car video and automatic recognition systems, customer relationship management and corporate knowledge delivery systems, emergency services MIS, mobilisation and command & control systems. Screen employs approximately 150 people in the UK and Denmark and operates in over 46 countries. Screen's most visible product is ProVida, the in-car video evidence systems used by many of the world's police forces. Footage from this product regularly features in TV programs such as 'Police Camera Action' across the world. Screen's most recent acquisition - Pentyre Ltd specialises in the development and support of software for surveillance, imaging, real-time control and communications systems. Their solutions are used in a range of demanding environments including the London Underground. The company offers a comprehensive set of control centre software products for both the public and private sectors, and provides project based development services to many leading international communications and control equipment manufacturers. Pentyre is currently being re-branded as Petards Projects. Argus DCS is a large image capture, storage and retrieval product that enables images to be captured from normal analogue CCTV cameras. It can be linked to Automatic Number Plate Recognition software to form a highly effective vehicle tracking system for port, harbours and other areas with large traffic flows. A special use of this product is for damage control where, for example, a shipping line may get claims for damage to vehicles in transit. Photographs of the vehicles are taken prior to loading and after unloading to enable verification, or otherwise, of an insurance claim. Southampton Container Terminals (SCT), formed as a joint venture between P&O Ports and Associated British Ports (ABP) in 1989, combines the considerable natural advantages of the Port of Southampton with a commitment to customers and the provision of cutting-edge technology that ensures delivery of a premier service.
