Statement re R&D funding
PipeHawk plc is pleased to announce that following an annual review by the
European Commission, the company has secured continued EU backing for its work
on Project Lotus, a programme intended to demonstrate the viability of a
vehicle-mounted system for clearing anti-personnel land mines.
The programme is designed to lead to a marketable commercial product using
PipeHawk's ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology.
In reaching its decision to provide continued funding for Project Lotus, the
Commission noted that the project has a good mix of partners and is well
positioned to demonstrate a step forward in the landmine detection process.
PipeHawk is the lead technical project coordinator for the programme.
Earlier EU trials have already established that PipeHawk's GPR technology can
locate all types of mines with 100% success, uniquely meeting the 99.6%
clearance rate deemed essential by the UN. The company has already been involved
in three EC projects to improve mine detection techniques. Aside from pressing
humanitarian issues, there are strong commercial reasons for extensive mine
clearance - for example, in Angola, where a minefield as big as France is
preventing exploitation of geological and other resources.
