- Notification of Major Interest in Shares

The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.

On 16 January 2008, the Company received notification, under the obligations
imposed by Section DTR5 of the FSA's Disclosure & Transparency Rules, from
Goldman Sachs International that, as at 14 January 2008, The Goldman Sachs
Group, Inc. ('GS Inc') had a notifiable interest in the voting rights attached
to 13,296,327 Ordinary 13 8/9p shares representing 3.40% of the total voting
rights in The Rank Group Plc.

Notes:

a) The interest in 12,439,306 shares arose from an interest held by Goldman,
Sachs & Co., a wholly-owned direct subsidiary of GS Inc, acting as custodian for
its customers. These shares are, or will be, registered in the name of Goldman
Sachs Securities (Nominees), Limited.

b) The interest in 19,152 shares arose from an interest held by Goldman, Sachs &
Co., a wholly-owned direct subsidiary of GS Inc, acting as discretionary
manager. These shares are, or will be, registered in the name of Goldman Sachs
Securities (Nominees), Limited.

c) The interest in 837,869 shares arose from a beneficial interest held by
Goldman Sachs International, a wholly-owned indirect subsidiary of GS Inc. These
shares are, or will be, registered at CREST in account CREPTEMP.
