                Statement re Regional Independent Media ('RIM')

The board of Trinity Mirror notes the announcements made on 26th June and 30th
June 2000 by Gannett UK Ltd, owner of Newsquest, and by Johnston Press PLC,
respectively, that they are making formal approaches to the Secretary of State
for Trade and Industry for consent for a possible transfer of the RIM
newspaper titles so that they may make an offer for RIM.

After careful consideration the board of Trinity Mirror has concluded that it
will not be making a similar approach to the Secretary of State.
