Fire at ELWA Frog Island MBT Facility
Shanks Group plc (LSE:SKS) today announces that there was a fire on Monday at its Frog Island facility and that business continuity plans have been implemented and are working well.
The fire took place at the Frog Island Mechanical Biological Treatment ("MBT") facility in East London, which is one of the two MBT facilities forming part of the East London Waste Authority ("ELWA") PFI project. The project is jointly owned and funded by Shanks Group plc and by John Laing Environmental Assets Group Ltd and the facilities are operated by Shanks.
We are pleased that thanks to the efforts of the fire services and the effective emergency procedures on site, there were no injuries and the fire was brought under control without risk to the public.
We have implemented our incident management and business continuity plans without delay and we are continuing to accept all waste from the boroughs served by the Frog Island facility to minimise any impact on the local collection of waste. The majority of the waste from the East London boroughs served by ELWA has been diverted for processing at the project's other MBT facility at Jenkins Lane.
We are assessing the extent of the damage at the site, which will be fully repaired, and will report on recommissioning progress in due course. The impact of the fire is currently not expected to be material to the financial performance of the Group.
