                    Shanks Group plc Chairman of the Board


The Board of waste management company Shanks Group plc today announces that Mr
G H Waddell will retire as Chairman of the Board and as a Director on 25 April
2002. Mr G H Waddell will be succeeded by Mr I M Clubb, who is currently the
senior independent director.
