Appointment of John Varley as chairman of the Rio Tinto Remuneration committee

John Varley, who joined the Boards of Rio Tinto plc and Rio Tinto Limited on 1 September 2011, has been appointed chairman of the Remuneration committee with effect from 18 October 2011.  Andrew Gould, the current chairman of the Remuneration committee, will remain a member of the committee and, as previously announced, will retire from the Boards of Rio Tinto Limited and Rio Tinto plc following the conclusion of the 2012 AGMs. 

This announcement is made pursuant to Listing Rule 9.6.11R(3).
