Q2 Production Report - Pt.1

Rio Tinto PLC 25 July 2001 PART 1 Rio Tinto Quarterly Production Report For the Quarter ending 30 June 2001 Production of all principal mined commodities was higher in the second quarter and first half of 2001 compared with the same periods in 2000. The higher production was attributable primarily to the major acquisitions completed in the last year. *Iron ore production was 52% higher in the second quarter of 2001 compared with the same quarter in 2000. Hamersley achieved record first half production in 2001, 8% higher than the previous first half record in 1999. *Coal production was 22% higher than in the second quarter of 2000. In the US production was 15% higher. Australian coal production was 54% higher following the acquisition of the Lemington and Peabody coal assets in the Hunter Valley. *Mined copper production in the second quarter of 2001 was 16% higher than in the same quarter of 2000. Higher grades at Kennecott Utah Copper and Grasberg, Indonesia, offset a reduction in the grade at Escondida, Chile. Total copper output included production from the Group's interests in Alumbrera, Argentina and Northparkes, Australia, purchased through the North acquisition in 2000. *Gold production increased by 60% compared with the second quarter of 2000, primarily due to higher grades at Grasberg and Kennecott Utah Copper, and the increased capacity acquired with North. *Primary aluminium production was 17% higher in the quarter compared with the same period in 2000, reflecting the acquisition of the Comalco minorities in 2000. *Diamond production was 12% ahead of the same quarter in 2000. The lower ore grade at Argyle was more than offset by the increased ownership of the mine following the acquisition of Ashton in the second half of 2000. *Titanium feedstock production was 20% higher, and borates production marginally higher, than in the same quarter of 2000. The half year results for 2001 are scheduled to be released on 2 August 2001. Rio Tinto's share of production has been calculated using the weighted average of Rio Tinto's interest over the relevant periods. (b) During March 2001, Rio Tinto increased its stake in Coal & Allied from 70.88% to 72.71%. Rio Tinto's share of production has been calculated using the weighted average of Rio Tinto's interest over the relevant periods. (c) Coal & Allied has purchased the Australian subsidiaries of the Peabody Group. Production data are shown from 29 January 2001 the effective date of acquisition. Coal & Allied acquired an additional 11.8% interest in the Warkworth mine from Ticor Limited. (d) Production from the Lemington mine, acquired by Coal & Allied with effect from 20 December 2000, is included with Hunter Valley Operations. (e) Rio Tinto has a 50% share in Kaltim Prima and, under the terms of its Coal Agreement, the Indonesian Government is entitled to a 13.5% share of Kaltim Prima's production. Rio Tinto's share of production shown is before deduction of the Government share. (f) Kennecott Energy has a partnership interest in the Colowyo mine, but, as it is responsible under a management agreement for the operation of the mine, all of Colowyo's output is included in Rio Tinto's share of production. (g) Rio Tinto's share of production from the assets owned by North Limited is shown with effect from 11 August 2000, the effective date of the acquisition. (h) Rio Tinto's initial interests in the Grasberg mine and in the Atlantic Copper smelter were acquired in 1995 by virtue of an acquisition of shares in Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX). As a result of FCX share buy-backs, Rio Tinto's interest in FCX has changed and, as of 30 June 2001, Rio Tinto had, by virtue of its FCX shareholding, a 14.3% share in Grasberg and a 16.6% share in Atlantic Copper. Under the Joint Venture agreement with FCX, Rio Tinto is entitled to 40% of additional material mined as a consequence of the expansion of the Grasberg facilities. The additional entitlement is shown separately in the above tables. (i)Rio Tinto increased its holding in Palabora from 46.5% to 48.6% during November 2000; it acquired a further 0.7% in July 2001. (j) On 10 November 2000, Rio Tinto acquired control of Ashton Mining and, as of 17 January 2001, owned 100%. As a result of this purchase, with effect from 10 November 2000, Rio Tinto's effective interest in Argyle Diamonds increased from 59.7% to 99.8%. Shown separately is Rio Tinto's share of production from Ashton's diamond interests apart from Argyle. (k) Effective 14 February 2000, Rio Tinto's interest in Lihir decreased from 17.15% to 16.3% following a placement of shares by Lihir Gold. (l) Rio Tinto acquired 20.3% of the Labrador Iron Ore Royalty Income Fund during the first half of 2001. The Fund has a shareholding in Iron Ore Company of Canada but this has not been included in the calculation of tonnage attributable to Rio Tinto. (m) Rio Tinto completed the sale of its interest in Norzink on 17 April 2001. In the second quarter of 2001, bauxite production was adversely affected by closure of the port at Weipa for maintenance in May, resulting in full stockpiles and hence a cut back in mine production, plus low truck availability in June. Bauxite shipments in the second quarter were lower than in the first quarter of 2001 primarily due to unrealised traded market shipments. Alumina production in the second quarter of 2001 has improved on the first quarter of 2001; production restrictions and unscheduled maintenance at the QAL refinery are the major reasons for lower production in the first half of 2001 compared with 2000. Aluminium sales for the first half of 2001 were reduced, largely due to a weakening aluminium market and timing of recognition of sales to the US. Some of Comalco's primary aluminium has been marketed in the US through Metal Exchange Corporation since the start of 2001. There is approximately a two month delay between shipment of metal from Australasia and invoicing to customers. Aluminium production in the second quarter of 2001 was similar to the first quarter of 2001. (b) Coal & Allied purchased the Australian subsidiaries of the Peabody Group effective 29 January 2001. Effective on the same date Coal & Allied acquired an additional 11.8% interest in the Warkworth mine from Ticor Limited. (c) Hunter Valley Operations consist of the merged Howick and Hunter Valley mines, as well as the Lemington mine acquired with effect from 20 December 2000. (d) Sales relate only to coal mined by the operations and exclude traded coal. Coal production for Hunter Valley Operations decreased in the second quarter of 2001 compared with the first quarter of 2001 due to low in pit inventory levels which adversely affected coal deliveries to the Lemington and Hunter Valley coal preparation plants. A Narama mine contract has a June year end, which traditionally leads to increased production in the second quarter of the year. In addition a spot tonnage contract had to be delivered by June 2001. Ravensworth East coal production improved during the second quarter of 2001 compared with the first quarter of 2001, which had been constrained by heavy rainfall. All mining operations in the Hunter Valley were significantly affected by wet weather during the first quarter of 2001. In the second quarter of 2001, production of all metals in concentrate, except molybdenum, was higher than in the second quarter of 2000, and first quarter of 2001, primarily due to mining in a higher ore grade area and to a change in mine plan in response to the suspension of the North concentrator operation. Molybdenum output in the second quarter of 2001 was lower than the second quarter of 2000 and first quarter of 2001 because of lower ore grade and recovery. Smelter copper anode output was higher in the second quarter of 2001 compared with both the second quarter of 2000 and the first quarter of 2001, largely due to higher plant availability. In the second quarter of 2001, refined copper and gold production was lower than in the second quarter of 2000 and first quarter of 2001 mainly due to the build up of the refinery tankhouse inventory, lower precious metal plant equipment availability and timing of gold production from intermediate products. Refined silver production in the second quarter of 2001 was higher than in the second quarter of 2000 and first quarter of 2001 primarily due to higher equipment availability and the timing of production from intermediate products. Lihir Gold Total production at the Lihir gold mine (Rio Tinto 16.3%(a)) in Papua New Guinea. (b) Gold production represents quantity of gold poured. Second quarter production benefited from sustained higher grade ore, but was restricted by lower plant availability than in the first quarter. Production data are shown from 11 August 2000, the effective date of the acquisition. (b) Rio Tinto's 80% share of material from the Joint Venture. Modified draw strategy has improved underground copper grades over last year. Gold grades were higher as sourcing of mill feed from open cut pits increased. Palabora Total production at the Palabora mine, smelter and refinery (Rio Tinto 48.6%(a)) in South Africa. (b) Contained copper in anodes; anode production includes a small amount produced from purchased material. Copper production was severely disrupted during the second quarter of 2001 by industrial action lasting 23 days. The presence of friable ore in the open pit, low concentrate grades, low matte grades and low converter availability also restricted production during the second quarter. Uranium production was affected by lower feed grades associated with deepening of the open pit. Magnetite production was reduced and no nickel sulphate was produced during the industrial action. Vermiculite mining from the lower benches where the higher grades are concentrated was hampered by high water table levels following the rains in the first quarter of 2001. Wet feed also adversely affected plant operations. Low zirconia content in material from the copper pit reduced the quality of feed to the baddeleyite plants; the plants were shut down during the industrial action.
