Qrtly Production Report -Pt.1
Rio Tinto PLC
24 October 2001
Rio Tinto Quarterly Production Report
For the Quarter ending 30 September 2001
* Rio Tinto's major acquisitions completed in the last year contributed
significantly to higher production in the third quarter of 2001.
* Iron ore production was 19% higher in the third quarter of 2001
compared with the same period in 2000. Hamersley and Robe River both
established new quarterly production records. Third quarter 2001
shipments for both Hamersley and Robe exceeded both first and second
quarters of 2001.
* Coal production was 7% higher than in the third quarter of 2000. In
the US, production was 6% lower than in the third quarter of 2000 due to
lower production at Jacobs Ranch, although year to date production was
some 5% higher than in the same period of 2000. Australian coal production
continues to be significantly higher following the acquisition of the
Lemington and Peabody coal assets in the Hunter Valley.
* Mined copper production was in line with the same period in 2000.
Production at Escondida fell by 17% but this was offset by full quarterly
production contributions from Alumbrera and Northparkes.
* Gold production increased by 36% compared with the same quarter of
2000 primarily due to higher production at Freeport and the increased
capacity acquired with North.
* Aluminium production was 1% lower than in the same quarter of 2000 as
hydro power constraints in New Zealand, caused by drought conditions,
lowered Tiwai Point output.
* Diamond production was 99% higher than in the same quarter of 2000 as
production at Argyle returned to higher grade areas in the pit coupled
with an increased share in ownership following the Ashton acquisition.
* Titanium feedstock production was 5% higher and borates production
some 12% lower than the same quarter of 2000.

Copper smelter were acquired in 1995 by virtue of an acquisition of shares in
Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX). As a result of FCX share buy-backs, Rio
Tinto's interest in FCX has changed and, as of 30 September 2001, Rio Tinto
had,by virtue of its FCX shareholding, a 14.3% share in Grasberg and a 16.6%
share in Atlantic Copper. Under the Joint Venture agreement with FCX, Rio
Tinto is entitled to 40% of additional material mined as a consequence of the
expansion of the Grasberg facilities. The additional entitlement is shown
separately in the above tables.
(j) Rio Tinto increased its holding in Palabora from 46.5% to 48.6% during
November 2000; it acquired a further 0.7% in July 2001.
(k) On 10 November 2000, Rio Tinto acquired control of Ashton Mining and, as
of 17 January 2001, owned 100%. As a result of this purchase, with effect from
10 November 2000, Rio Tinto's effective interest in Argyle Diamonds increased
from 59.7% to 99.8%. Shown separately is Rio Tinto's share of production from
Ashton's diamond interests apart from Argyle.
(l) Effective 14 February 2000, Rio Tinto's interest in Lihir decreased from
17.15% to 16.3% following a merger under a scheme of arrangement with Niugini
Mining.
(m) Rio Tinto acquired 20.3% of the Labrador Iron Ore Royalty Income Fund
during the first half of 2001. The Fund has a shareholding in Iron Ore Company
of Canada but this has not been included in the calculation of tonnage
attributable to Rio Tinto.
(n)Rio Tinto completed the sale of its interest in Norzink on 17 April 2001.
Where Rio Tinto's beneficial interest in an operation has changed, as
indicated above, the share of production has been calculated using the weighted
average of its interest over the relevant periods.

100%.
(b) Comalco increased its shareholding in Queensland Alumina Limited from
30.3% to 38.6% with effect from 31 August 2001.
Weipa production was affected by limited equipment availability during the
third quarter of 2001 and adjustments to meet changed contract commitments.
Total alumina production in the third quarter of 2001 improved compared with
the second quarter of 2001 with QAL returning to a more normal level of
operation. Production restrictions and unscheduled maintenance at the two
refineries resulted in lower production in the first nine months of 2001
compared with 2000. In the third quarter of 2001, aluminium production at
Tiwai Point was adversely affected by hydro power constraints which were a
result of drought conditions; production at Bell Bay and Boyne Island smelters
increased compared with the first two quarters of 2001 due to higher cell
availability.
Aluminium sales in the third quarter were similar to the second quarter of
2001. Comalco continued to market some of its primary aluminium in the US
through Metal Exchange Corporation.

(a) Semi-hard coking coal is a mixture of thermal coal and coking coal.
The product mix is customer dependent.
Blair Athol production was higher for the first nine months of 2001 when
compared with the same period of 2000 due to minimal disruption from
mining through old underground workings. These workings restricted
production in 2000. Sales have decreased in the third quarter of 2001
when compared with the second quarter of 2001 due to train derailments on
the Goonyella line, combined with port and rail capacity restrictions.
The third quarter production at Kestrel was the highest since the mine was
acquired by Pacific Coal in 1999. A contributory factor was the increase
in reliability of the longwall equipment.
Tarong production and sales were down this quarter due to a planned unit
stop for maintenance at Tarong Energy Corporation.
When compared with the first nine months of 2000, total coal production
for the first nine months of 2001 was 11% higher and total sales were 4%
higher.

Third quarter 2001 production of all metals, compared with the second quarter,
was lower largely due to lower ore grade and the suspension of the North
concentrator operation. In the third quarter of 2001, production of
molybdenum was lower than in the third quarter of 2000 primarily due to lower
ore grade and recovery.
Smelter copper anode output was lower in the third quarter of 2001 compared
with both the third quarter of 2000 and the second quarter of 2001 primarily
due to lower plant availability associated with the scheduled flash converter
maintenance shutdown.
In the third quarter of 2001, refined copper, gold and silver production
was lower than the third quarter of 2000 principally due to lower anode
production. Compared with the second quarter of 2001, refined copper and

(b) Rio Tinto's 80% share of material from the Joint Venture.
Modified draw strategy, implemented in April 2001, improved underground
copper grade compared with last year. Gold grades, during the first nine
months of 2001, remained higher than in the corresponding period of 2000
as sourcing of mill feed from open cut pits was increased.

during the fourth quarter of 2000; it acquired a further 0.7% in July
2001.
(b) Contained copper in anodes; anode production includes a small amount
produced from purchased material.
Copper production improved steadily during the third quarter of 2001 as
the operational difficulties experienced during, and in the aftermath of
the strike, were overcome.
Ore supply was affected by low crusher and shovel availability. Reduced
ore feed limited concentrate production.
Smelter production improved during the quarter following high levels of
equipment availability and increased converter operating hours. Refined
copper production remained low for the quarter although this mainly
reflects the restocking of the refinery following low utilisation after
the strike. Low concentrator and refinery throughput affected magnetite,
nickel sulphate and precious metal production.
Uranium and baddeleyite production ceased during the quarter following
closure of the heavy minerals plant in August.
Vermiculite production increased due to improved mining conditions during
the dry season. Production was affected by a 14 day planned plant
shutdown for essential refurbishment.

Hamersley achieved record production for a third quarter, exceeding the
previous record set in 2000 by 6%. A new monthly production record of
6.6Mt was also set in July 2001. The quarter's high production levels are
a result of the current strong demand for fines product.
