RM PLC 29 January 2004 29th January 2004 RM appoints leading educationalist Mike Tomlinson as Non-Executive Director RM plc, the UK's leading supplier of ICT and other services to education, has appointed leading educationalist Mike Tomlinson CBE as a Non-Executive Director. He joins the Board with effect from the 2nd February 2004. Mike is currently Chair of the DfES' (Department for Education and Skills) Working Group on educational reform for 14-19 year olds. As Her Majesty's Chief Inspector for Schools, Mike was responsible for the work of Ofsted (the Office for Standards in Education) from December 2000 until April 2002. In Summer 2002 he was asked by Estelle Morris (Secretary of State for Education at the time) to head an independent expert inquiry into A Level Standards. John Leighfield, Chairman of the RM Group, said: RM is fortunate to have attracted an educationalist of Mike Tomlinson's stature as a Board Member. Mike has vast experience of education and is highly respected by teachers and education policy makers alike. Mike Tomlinson - additional biographical details After gaining a degree in chemistry from Durham University and a teaching qualification from Nottingham University, Mike Tomlinson taught between 1965 and 1977. In 1977 he was seconded to ICI and then in 1978 he joined Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Schools. Following the creation of Ofsted in 1992 he became Deputy Director of Inspection, then Director of Inspection. In December 2000 he was appointed Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools. Mike is Chair of the Learning Trust (the body set up to manage education services in the London Borough of Hackney). He is also Chair of the Advisory Board of GEMS UK (part of Global Education Management Systems, an international education management consultancy).
