ILFC PLACES LANDMARK ORDER FOR ROLLS-ROYCE TRENT ENGINES
Rolls-Royce plc, the civil aerospace, defence, marine and energy group, today
entered into an agreement with International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC)
covering new business valued at up to US$910 million for Trent engines to
power up to 37 firm and option Boeing 777s and Airbus Industrie A330 and A3XX
aircraft.
The value of this agreement is the largest to date between Rolls-Royce and
ILFC, and takes the total number of Trent engines in the ILFC fleet to over
170.
John Cheffins, Managing Director Airlines, Rolls-Royce, said: 'This
announcement from one of the world's leading aircraft leasing companies
reflects the worldwide demand among airlines for the Trent family of engines.
Inclusion of the Trent 900 in the agreement, for the A3XX, is particularly
significant. The engine is tailored for the aircraft and today's news gives us
a strong position on that programme.'
Four Trent 900s, with a thrust band of 68,000 - 75,000lb, will power the A3XX.
The Boeing 777s will use 92,000lb thrust Trent 892 engines while the A330s
will be powered by Trent 772Bs, rated at 72,000lb thrust. Deliveries of the
Boeing 777s and A330s will begin in 2002.
Trent family background:
A total of 25 customers have placed firm and option orders for over 1,300
Trent engines with a total value of around $16 billion. The Trent family has
an overall market share approaching 50 per cent on new generation widebody
aircraft.
The Trent 800 (77,000 - 95,000lb thrust) is the market leader on the Boeing
777 with a 44 per cent share. Eleven customers have ordered over 250
Trent-powered Boeing 777s.
The Trent 700 (68,000 - 72,000lb thrust) has 15 customers and a 38 per cent
market share on the Airbus A330. Nine new customers took delivery of
Trent-powered A330s last year.
Flight testing is well advanced with the 53,000 - 56,000lb thrust Trent 500,
sole powerplant for the new long range, high capacity A340-500/-600. Record
advance orders of more than $5 billion totalling 129 aircraft have been
received from 10 customers. Entry into service with Virgin Atlantic will be in
Spring 2002.
Development of the Trent 900 is being paced in parallel with the A3XX
programme with entry into service due in 2005. The engine will be certificated
at 80,000lb thrust, allowing comfortable growth margin from initial in-service
levels of 68,000 - 75,000lb.
Agreement has been reached with Boeing for the Trent 600 (68,000 - 72,000lb
thrust) to be offered for future developments of Boeing 747 and 767 aircraft.
