Rolls-Royce PLC 16 January 2002 16 January 2002 MARUBENI BECOMES LATEST TRENT 900 PARTNER: SAMSUNG AND IHI CONFIRMED AS TRENT 900 PROGRAMME ASSOCIATES Japan's Marubeni Corporation has been named today (16 January) as the latest risk and revenue sharing partner (RRSP) to join the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 programme. The engine is being developed for the new Airbus Industrie A380 high-capacity airliner, scheduled to enter service in 2006. Rolls-Royce and Marubeni have also announced that as part of this partnership arrangement, Samsung Techwin of Korea and Ishikawajima Harima Industries (IHI) of Japan will be Trent 900 Programme Associates following the signing of long-term agreements. Samsung takes responsibility for supply of the combustor, its first relationship with Rolls-Royce on large civil engines, while IHI will supply low pressure turbine blades, a role it already performs on today's Trent family. John Cheffins, Chief Operating Officer, Rolls-Royce, said: 'These significant developments for the Trent 900 build on partner announcements made at the end of last year. We welcome Marubeni once more on to our Trent engine family and we are delighted that they bring with them the manufacturing strengths of Samsung and IHI. Our ability to attract world-class partners, associates and suppliers is a key strategic element of all the Trent programmes.' In November 2001, FiatAvio, Goodrich Corporation, Hamilton Sundstrand and Honeywell became RRSPs on the Trent 900, joining Volvo whose participation in the programme had been announced earlier in the year. The Trent 900, which will be certificated in 2004 at a thrust level of 81,500lb, has been selected by A380 launch customer Singapore Airlines in addition to Virgin Atlantic, Qantas and International Lease Finance Corporation.
