ROLLS-ROYCE WINS $63MILLION ORDER
TO UPGRADE AMERICAN TRANS AIR FLEET
Rolls-Royce has been chosen by American Trans Air (ATA) to upgrade the RB211
engines on its fleet of Lockheed L-1011 Tristars. Including spare engines, the
deal represents $63 million worth of business over the next three years.
The work involves upgrading the RB211-524B4s on ATA's five L-1011-500 aircraft
with a modification package that includes an enhanced standard of combustor
and improved high and low pressure turbines. The result is increased time
on-wing and improved fuel consumption.
Ian Aitken, Executive Vice President Airlines - North America, Rolls-Royce
said,
'This follow-on business from American Trans Air capitalises on our policy of
feeding back latest technology benefits into mature products.'
As North America's largest charter carrier, ATA flies to more than 400
destinations. As well as its 19 L-1011s, it also operates 13 Boeing 757s
powered by Rolls-Royce RB211-535E4 engines. ATA recently ordered Rolls-Royce
RB211 engines for a further 22 Boeing 757-300 aircraft with deliveries
beginning in July 2001.
