RYANAIR STATEMENT ON POSSIBLE PILOT STRIKE
Ryanair today (Tuesday, 21st November 2000) confirmed that they had been
advised by pilots that there may be a 24 hour strike by some or all of its
Irish based pilots on Friday next.
Whilst Ryanair will be holding a further meeting directly with the Ryanair
pilots committee in Dublin (due to be held on Wednesday) there can be no
guarantee at this stage that Ryanair's Irish schedules will not suffer some
disruption on Friday. All passengers who so wish are being offered the
alternative of changing their planned itinerary to fly on Thursday or Saturday
if convenient, or a refund. As soon as further details or information becomes
available then they will be communicated to passengers through Ryanair's
website at www.RYANAIR.COM.
Commenting today on this development, Ryanair's Chief Executive, Michael
O'Leary, said:
'This threat of strike action is just the latest evidence of Ryanair's
pilots being entirely and deliberately misled by IMPACT, the Aer Lingus
trade union. There are a number of facts, which IMPACT continue to
mislead the public about. The most important one is that Ryanair has not
changed and will not be changing any pilots flying hours. Pilot hours
and rosters at Ryanair haven't altered since 1997 when the current five
year agreement was put in place, and this will continue to be the case
both before and after Friday next.
'It is also a nonsense put about by IMPACT that Ryanair's pilots work 50
or 60 hours a week. They don't. In the current month Ryanair's pilots
are rostered for 26 hours of duty a week.
'The fact remains that even by IMPACT's own published figures Ryanair's
pilots are better paid than their equivalent opposite numbers in Aer
Lingus, they work extremely favourable working conditions (they are
presently averaging 26 hours a week, and are receiving five days off in
every two week period). In return all of Ryanair's pilots have an offer
in front of them which would see every single one of them rise to
£100,000 per annum in total pay by the end of the proposed new five year
agreement.
'Ryanair's pilots work hard, and they play a major part in Ryanair's
continuing success. However, Ryanair's pilots are also the best paid
and the least worked of any group of workers within Ryanair. They
have and will continue to share in Ryanair's success, but they must also
understand that we are not going to be blackmailed by IMPACT who can't
get this type of deal for pilots in Aer Lingus.
