RYANAIR CARRIES 1 MILLION PASSENGERS IN AUGUST
First time to carry 1 million passengers a month as traffic grows by 35% over
August 2000
Ryanair, Europe's largest low fares airline this morning announced that it had
carried over
one million passengers in a month for the first time in its 16 year history.
Traffic during August 2001 grew by 35 to a new record of 1,021,000, as
passengers flocked to Ryanair's low fares and extensive (55 routes) network
between the UK and continental Europe. The load factor for the month of August
rose by 5% points to 85% (a figure that excludes no shows and staff travel).
Announcing this record traffic this morning, Ryanair's Chief Executive,
Michael O'Leary said;
'To be the first low fares airline in Europe to carry one million
passengers in a single month is a phenomenal achievement by the 1,500
people in Ryanair. Not alone are we Europe's largest low fares airline,
but we are also still growing faster than many of the others who are
trying to imitate Ryanair's low fares formula. Much of this growth has
been delivered at our new base at Brussels Charleroi, but we are also
stimulating traffic growth across the network as we use the larger Boeing
737-800 series aircraft to provide even more seats at even lower fares.
'It is hard to believe that just ten years ago Ryanair didn't even carry
one million passengers in an entire year, yet now we have carried one
million in a month. The fact that Ryanair's average fare today is almost
40% lower in absolute terms than it was ten years ago confirms that
Ryanair's model - we are the only airline in Europe to guarantee that our
fares are the lowest - continues to stimulate huge growth in passengers
who are travelling for business, for pleasure or just visiting friends and
relatives. These figures confirm that we are on track towards our
projected traffic numbers of 9.3 million this year and they highlight our
ability to grow successfully, even in an adverse economic environment in
the aviation business.
'Passengers are fed up paying the rip off air fares charged by flag
carrier airlines all over Europe and Ryanair's continuing growth means
that more and more European consumers now have a real choice, and the
ability to make huge savings by travelling with Ryanair, Europe's largest
low fares airline.
Ends.
