Changes to the Board of Directors

Sainsbury's Board Changes

J Sainsbury plc announces that Sir Peter Davis, Group Chief Executive, assumes
direct responsibility for running Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd with immediate
effect.

Peter Davis said 'It is clear to me that if I am to bring about the scale and
pace of change that I believe is necessary, then it requires me to take active
day to day control of the supermarkets business'.

As a result of this change, David Bremner, formerly Managing Director of
Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd, is leaving J Sainsbury plc.

Robin Whitbread, Group Board Director, takes on the role of Retail Director,
Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd.  As a result of this change, Kevin McCarten,
formerly Stores Director of Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd, is leaving J
Sainsbury plc.
