                NEW NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR J SAINSBURY PLC


J Sainsbury plc has today appointed Bridget Macaskill to its Board as a
non-executive director with effect from 1 February 2002.  Ms Macaskill (53) was
Chairman and Chief Executive of Oppenheimer Funds Inc, and is based in New York.
Ms Macaskill, a graduate of Edinburgh University, spent her early career with
Unigate Plc where she held a number of senior marketing and management
positions.

Sir George Bull, Chairman of J Sainsbury plc said 'I am delighted to welcome
Bridget to the Board.  She has valuable experience in the food industry and in
financial services.  Her US background and experience will be of considerable
relevance to Shaw's, our supermarket operation in the US.  Her appointment gives
us a good balance on the Board between executive and non-executive directors.'
