J Sainsbury plc announces start date for chief financial officer and change to
operating board
Sainsbury's today confirms that its new chief financial officer, Darren
Shapland, will join the company on 1 August 2005. His appointment was announced
on 24 March 2005. He will join both the company's plc and operating boards.
Darren joins from Carpetright plc where he is currently group finance director.
He replaces Roger Matthews who announced in October 2004 his intention to
retire. He will leave J Sainsbury plc in June 2005 after the company's
Preliminary Results have been announced but will continue in his role as
non-executive chairman of Sainsbury's Bank plc. Jonny Mason, Sainsbury's
director of supermarket finance, will run the finance function and represent it
on Sainsbury's operating board until Darren's arrival.
Sainsbury's also announces a change to its operating board. Stephen Nelson,
marketing director, will leave the company this summer to take up the role of
retail director at BAA plc. Succession details will be announced in due course.

• Jonny Mason joined Sainsburys in August 2001 as director of corporate
finance.
• Stephen Nelson joined Sainsbury's in July 2003 as trading director.
He became marketing director in November 2004.
• Roger Matthews became chairman of Sainsbury's Bank plc in 2002.
