                           Appointment of Director

Schroder Japan Growth Fund plc is pleased to announce that on 1 June 2001, Mrs
Phillipa Gould was appointed as a Director of the Company.

Mrs Gould was born in July 1956. After graduating with a degree in Computer
Science and Accounting, her investment career commenced in 1978 working as a
Far East Fund Manager with Guardian Royal Exchange. After moving to County
Bank Investment Management, she then spent 11 years at Hill Samuel Investment
Management in charge of the Far East desk. She joined Schroders in 1996. At
the present time she is an Executive Director of Schroder Investment
Management Limited and is responsible for Global Equity and Pacific Basin
accounts.


It is confirmed that there are no details to be disclosed concerning Mrs Gould
under paragraph 6.F.2(b) to (g) of the Listing Rules.
