Spectris plc: Transaction in own shares

Spectris plc announces that on 9 May 2007 it purchased 60,000 of its 5p ordinary
shares at a volume weighted average price paid per share of 962.460p. Spectris
plc purchased these shares via Hoare Govett Limited's affiliate, ABN AMRO Bank
N.V., London Branch.

The highest price paid per share was 964.5p, and the lowest price paid was 959p.

The shares purchased will be held as treasury shares. Following the above
purchase, Spectris plc holds 665,511 shares in treasury.

The total number of ordinary shares in issue (excluding treasury shares) is
124,339,612.
