10 MILLION CUSTOMER ACCOUNTS

SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy plc) now supplies energy and related services to 10 million customer accounts for the first time. 

Its number of electricity and gas supply customer accounts in the energy markets in Great Britain and Ireland has increased by 335,000 in the past 12 months to almost 9.6 million; including home services, SSE's total customer base is now 10 million, an increase of  375,000 over the past year.

SSE began increasing its customer account numbers at the start of 2002, when the total was 4.5 million.  It supplies energy and related services as Southern Electric, SWALEC, Scottish Hydro Electric, Atlantic and Airtricity.

Alistair Phillips-Davies, Energy Supply Director of SSE, said:

"I am very pleased that eight years of continuous growth in customer numbers has culminated in us reaching this significant milestone.  Since the start of 2002, we have added an average of more than half a million customers every year.  We have achieved this growth on the back of best-in-sector service, market-leading product development and sustained value for money for customers. 

"While the last decade was about rapid growth, the next decade will be about the transformation in energy supply, as patterns of electricity and gas consumption change and as companies offer customers a broader and deeper range of services.  We can expect market conditions to be challenging, as the high wholesale gas prices experienced in recent months demonstrate.

"Throughout this period of change, SSE will maintain its focus on service, products and value and help customers through the fundamental changes in energy supply we can expect to see in the next few years."
