ACQUISITION OF DATA CENTRE

SSE Telecom, the telecommunications subsidiary of Scottish and Southern Energy plc ('SSE') has entered into an agreement to acquire a data centre business from Cantono Data Centre Services Limited, a subsidiary of Cantono plc, for a total cash consideration, payable on completion, of £4.85m.

The business has the potential to provide in excess of 2000 racks of co-location and data storage within the 80,000 square feet of capacity and 15MW (megawatts) of power in a resilient and energy efficient environment and uses a multi-tiered architecture which allows customers to select the level of service that they require.

Adrian Pike, Group Managing Director of SSE Telecom, said:

'As part of SSE, SSE Telecom is a financially-strong service provider and well-placed to build on the 18.3% increase in operating profit we announced last week. This data centre business is a natural next step in the development of SSE's telecoms business, and will complement the services we already provide to public sector organisations, businesses, internet service and application service providers and other telecoms operators.'

Notes

SSE's telecoms business operates a 10,300km UK-wide telecoms network. This includes 4,100km of fibre optic cabling, which SSE owns; the remainder is leased lit fibre (2,600km) and microwave radio (3,600km). As a result, SSE is the fourth largest telecoms network company in the UK. During 2008/09 it achieved an operating profit of £15.5m, an increase of 18.3% on the previous year (excluding assets disposed of in 2007).
