SCOTTISH AND SOUTHERN ENERGY PLC
CONTRACT TO DEVELOP 100TH EMBEDDED NETWORK
SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy plc) has signed a contract with Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK Ltd which will result in the development of its 100th embedded electricity network outside the areas served by its economically-regulated subsidiaries Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution and Southern Electric Power Distribution.
Through its Utility Solutions business, SSE designs, builds, owns, operates and maintains networks delivering electricity, gas, water, heat and telecommunications to existing, and new commercial and residential developments in England, Wales and Scotland.
SSE's first embedded network, in London Docklands, was commissioned in 1999. Other embedded networks include Cobalt Business Park, North Tyneside, Newcastle Great Park, Collegelands Glasgow, Cardiff Sports Village, and The Shires Shopping Village, Leicester.
SSE now owns and operates 69 energised electricity networks outside its regulated distribution areas. A further 20 are under construction and contracts have been signed for the development of an additional 11, taking the total to 100. In total, it has almost 600MW of network capacity, including 420MW energised/under construction, plus contracts to develop another 175MW.
The contract for the 100th electricity network is in respect of Nissan/Turbine Business Park. Nissan is investing more than £200m in building an electric car battery factory at its plant in Sunderland, creating up to 350 jobs and assisting in plans to boost low-carbon industry in the region.
The factory will produce 60,000 lithium-ion batteries each year and SSE will provide provision for a £4.5m, 20MVA 66kV connection with future availability for power at the adjacent Turbine Business Park.
Adrian Pike, SSE's Group Managing Director of Contracting, Telecoms and Utility Solutions, said:
"This contract is a significant milestone in the development of SSE's Utility Solutions business. We have built up our embedded networks in a typical SSE way - step-by-step, year-by-year. They now represent a substantial asset for SSE and there remains significant scope for further growth as we continually evolve to make sure we meet the needs of our customers."
